(edited by Sergio Campailla)
One of the purposes that the Institute has set since the beginning is to enhance the local cultural heritage and to direct its attention on personalities coming from this land who have left a remarkable heritage by their literary, artistic and scientific activities.
It follows that the publication of Carlo Michelsteadter's whole work, edited by Sergio Campailla, member of the Institute, represents one of the most significant cultural initiatives in the publishing field. The joint edition with the distinguished publishing house Adelphi is meant to promote a broader circulation of Michelstaedter's work.
- Opera grafica e pittorica (1975)
- Scritti scolastici (1976)
- La persuasione e la rettorica (ed. Adelphi, 1982)
- Epistolario (ed. Adelphi, 1987)
- Poesie (ed. Adelphi, 1987)
- Il dialogo della salute (ed. Adelphi, 1988)
- La persuasione e la rettorica. Appendici critiche (ed. Adelphi, 1995)
Carlo Michelastadter was born in Gorizia in 1887 from a Jewish Italian family. His father was in charge of the Generali insurance company office in Trieste. Once passed his school-leaving examination, Michelstaedter entered the Faculty of Maths in Wien. Then he moved to Firenze where he meant to devote himself to painting. Instead, he attended the Faculty of Arts, focusing his attention especially on poetry and Greek philosophy. In 1909 he was back in Gorizia in order to draft his degree thesis. On the evening of October the 16th 1910, Michelsteadter finished writing the "critical appendixes" to La persuasione e la rettorica. The following day he committed suicide.
